I have been told that planting banana trees in an agroforestry system in my maize field could be beneficial but won't this create too much shade and compete with the maize?

We are establishing an alley cropping system in our maize fields in Malawi and are considering Glyricidia. Is this a good choice and if so how should we plant it?
